Attributes

Attributes are useful for placing special designations on courses. Some attributes are used to manage data internally while others can be added to a section and appear in the Class Search. They can be attached at the course level (via the Course Catalog) and/or individual section level (via Maintain Schedule of Classes).

Certain class attributes you can change or add to a section.

Step 1:  In ‘Maintain Schedule of Classes,’ go to the ‘Basic Data’ tab and find the ‘Class Attributes’ section at the bottom of the page.

Step 2:  If an attribute exists, but another should be added, click on the ‘+’ on the right side in order to add a new record/row.

Step 3:  The options are grouped into categories. Use the magnifying glass icon next to the ‘Course Attribute’ field in order to find available values. This brings up the ‘Look Up Course Attribute’ table.

Step 4:  Choose the desired attribute by clicking on it.

Step 5:  Next, use the magnifying glass icon next to the ‘Course Attribute Value’ to view the options for that particular attribute. The ‘Look Up Course Attribute Value’ table will display.

Step 6:  Choose the desired value by clicking on it.

Step 7:  Click the ‘Save’ button in the bottom left corner.

Common Class Attributes

YESEVAL: Classes requiring ClassEval.

BIWEEKLY: Classes meeting every other week need an attribute to distinguish them (A/B pattern).

INTERN: Internship courses require a liability insurance fee placed by Insurance & Risk Management, processed by the Cashier’s Office.

Common Catalog Attributes

Some attributes are present at the catalog level and will not always appear at the section level. Catalog attributes are used for designations affecting an entire course, not specific sections. These attributes should not be added at the section level if not approved for the course catalog. The most common catalog attributes that also appear in the published course catalog include:

GEP: Designates courses that fulfill General Education Program (GEP) requirements

  • GLOBAL: Global Knowledge
  • HES: Health/Exercise Studies
  • HUM: Humanities
  • INTERDISC: Interdisciplinary Perspectives
  • MATH: Mathematical Sciences
  • NATSCI: Natural Sciences
  • SOCSCI: Social Sciences
  • USDEI: U.S. Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion
  • VPA: Visual and Performing Arts

  • FALLSPRG: Offered in Fall and Spring
  • FALLSUM: Offered in Fall and Summer

  • SPRGSUM: Offered in Spring and Summer
  • SUM: Offered in Summer Only

YEAR: Indicates how often a course is typically scheduled (courses can be scheduled in any term if deemed appropriate)

  • ALTEVEN: Offered in Alternate Even Years (ex. 2020 and 2022)
  • ALTODD: Offered in Alternate Odd Years (ex. 2021 and 2023)
  • ALTYRS: Offered Alternate Years (not specific to even or odd year, but not offered every year)
  • ONDMND: Offered Upon Demand (offered when department or college determines appropriate demand)

Note: all sections offered in the previous like term will roll regardless of the YEAR attribute present, so schedulers should monitor when courses are active if they are on an alternating pattern.
